WHEDA Statement on State of the State Address
January 24, 2025
MADISON, Wis. — Governor Tony Evers spoke last night about his plans to help children thrive by investing in mental health services, addressing crime and gun violence, reducing the cost of childcare, and ensuring affordable life-saving prescription drugs.
WHEDA CEO and Executive Director Elmer Moore, Jr., the agency working to address the housing shortage, released the following statement in support of the Governor’s plans for 2025:
“As a parent, I commend Governor Evers for proclaiming 2025 the Year of the Kid and for focusing initiatives on the key issues that prevent children from thriving, including housing.
WHEDA believes housing is a core human need irrefutably linked to mental and physical health. No child should be worried about where they will sleep at night.
Housing quality and stability can significantly and powerfully impact a child’s development, health, and well-being. Studies show that poor-quality housing can cause higher levels of anxiety and depression and lead to physical and behavioral problems. Likewise, housing instability can cause children to experience emotional difficulties and developmental delays due to frequent moving or displacement.
We look forward to working with the Governor to integrate housing into his efforts to ensure the growth and development of Wisconsin children. We will continue to administer existing financing programs and create new ones that support affordable housing development throughout Wisconsin.”
