A groundbreaking ceremony was held last week for a major expansion at Nueske’s Applewood Smoked Meats in Wittenberg. The Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority (WHEDA) has awarded Nueske’s $11.5 million in New Markets Tax Credits and $2 million in a participation loan.
The funding will be used to finance an expansion in excess of 110,000 square feet. The project will retain Nueske’s existing positions while also creating 66 new jobs over the next three to four years.

“WHEDA is pleased to have partnered with Nueske’s through an allocation of New Market Tax Credits and a participation loan that will allow for the expansion of facilities and the continuation of a long and proud heritage” said Wyman Winston, Executive Director of WHEDA. “Nueske’s is an outstanding family owned Wisconsin company known across the country for its extraordinary smoked meats.”
Nueske’s, a third-generation company that started in 1933, manufactures and specializes in Applewood smoked products, and has been part of the Wittenberg community since it began operations. Nueske’s products include bacon, German sausages and bratwurst, ham, chicken, duck and turkey.
“Our family has been producing the world’s finest Applewood Smoked Meats for over 83 years, and we’re thrilled to be taking the next step in our journey together with the expansion of our current facility, right here in our small village of Wittenberg, Wisconsin,” said Nueske’s CEO Tanya Nueske. “I’m certain Dad would be very pleased that the vision we shared is becoming a reality. We look at this expansion as a win-win for our community, as well. We are excited to be bringing more jobs to the area and to be creating more opportunities for advancement within our own walls.”
Nueske’s expansion will allow for future sales growth and profitability. Expansion construction is anticipated to begin soon with completion expected by July 2017.
